Project description
The Reception Centre for immigrants in the Warsaw's district of Targówek is inhabited predominantly by Chechen nationals, who had made the decision to leave their country as a last resort, often feeling threatened and helpless. Their status in Poland is uncertain and will usually spend more than ten months in the Reception Centre. The immigrants' children are often frustrated because of the war trauma, escape and the sense of isolation from their mother country, uncertain future, not being able to communicate in the local language. Most of them will attend Primary School No. 58 in Warsaw. There were 107 immigrant children in Targówek in 2014, of whom 44 attended that particular school.
Children who are the asylum process have low school attendance and their education is often effective. Their Polish peers will act with indifference, sometimes with aggression towards them.
The project aimed at integrating immigrant children in Primary School No. 58 in Warsaw into their Polish peer community by organising joint education activities and events. There were plans to establish a regular interaction platform for parents, teachers and local officials to seek a more positive interaction between Polish and Chechen children.
As a result of the project, fewer aggressive acts between children were observed in the school. Other schools in the area paid more attention to the cultural diversity in Primary School No. 58 and shared its social integration experience and promoted it as a good practice.
The project implemented education activities around multiculturalism and events designed to help local children and youth find common ground with their peers from other countries, e.g. discussions about cultural diversity and training for Polish youth and children about cultural differences, tolerance and human rights; other examples include a workshop was held on how to defend against peer violence, integration activities for families, mutual language courses for children, joint sports activities and a street arts performance to promote the language of friendship.
Project beneficiaries included local Polish children and youth in Targówek and immigrant children and youth from the nearby Reception Centre all attending Primary School No. 58.
