Project description
The project was a response to the survey on intolerance among children and youth conducted by the Association for Civic Activities Carpe Diem in 2014. A special questionnaire was prepared and the survey was conducted among 300 pupils and students of primary and secondary schools. The survey results showed that it was necessary to develop long-term strategy for counteracting intolerance and discrimination among young people.
The aim of the project was to prevent intolerance among young people in Swidnica and to instil respect for diversity. The planned activities were to provide comprehensive knowledge necessary for learning about differences among people and empathizing with them. The knowledge would then be used for creating an educational spectacle and an exhibition against intolerance.
During the project implementation, 100 students from the Świdnica municipality learned about intolerance, other cultures and religious convictions. Young people also learned how to combat stereotypes and react to intolerance. The students took part in a cycle of training courses. A photo exhibition “Various faces of intolerance” was organized – it consisted of 17 tables with photographs and their descriptions. A website www.tolerancjanieogarniam.pl was launched and is edited by the participants. They prepared 15 scenarios, which were later used for the spectacle “Zgęstka”, performed at the Town Square.
The project beneficiaries were young people aged 13-20 from the Świdnica municipality, secondary schools students as well as those who already completed secondary education.
There were two project partners: the Świdnica Town Hall and the Society of the Children’s Friends, Świdnica Branch. The Society provided conceptual support and thanks to their experiences, the scenarios were adequately adopted to the participants’ age. They also helped in difficult situations while working with groups. The Town Hall provided financial support and facilitated introducing the new tools into schools. Cooperation of both partners resulted in taking steps towards introducing classes on tolerance during general educational periods in secondary schools (gymnasium).
