Project description
The aim of the project was to offer support for the Town Cultural Centre (TCC) in Orneta in animating social change. Persons excluded from participation in culture were included in the process of developing a programme for the institution. It was a response to the fact that participation in civil life depends on class situation (according to Pierre Bourdieu), social and economic status (the lower the status the weaker participation), and that cultural centres are used mainly by members of the middle class. Teams of the Foundation Dialogue Space (FPD) and TCC, together with inhabitants representing various social classes developed participatory TCC programme for 2016 and programme budget for 2017. They jointly planned and organised the Day of Inhabitant, integrating needs of different social groups. Works on cooperation plan for culture strengthened institutions in Orneta. Competencies of TCC were developed in diagnosing cultural participation dimensions and animating social change. Approx. 160 inhabitants took part in workshops. 6 workshops with groups of persons were organised to learn about different visions of the cultural centre, and another 6 workshops with all stakeholders to share the visions and work out a programme for TCC. Their participants organised an event for about 400 persons. During 5 workshops representatives of 25 entities: village clubrooms, TCC, libraries, schools, NGOs and town authorities developed a cooperation program for culture. As a result of joint work of FPD and TCC and 3 workshops, 8 persons from TCC were prepared to consider the class perspective. 2 seminars were organised to disseminate the results of the project among practitioners in the local government, NGOs and cultural institutions. A publication to sum up the project and a set of recommendations were prepared. In the project participated the TCC team, inhabitants of Orneta and neighbouring villages, village clubrooms, institutions and organisations from Orneta. The partner, TCC, contributed to the project their knowledge on local community, local institutions and organisations, their experience in cultural animation, organising events and cooperation with authorities, and was responsible for recruiting participants.
